COMPREHENSION Class 9 Notes

IS there any personification in this poem? if yes, where?Ans. Yes, there are many personifications in this poem "The Daffodils". Personification is a literary term in which we give human qualities to non-living objects or non-human things.
Personifications in the poem:
1- "When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
The daffodils are personified as a crowd of people. The daffodils actually can't dance but here the poet uses personification..
2- "Tossing their heads in sprightly dance." The use of personification again.
3- "The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee". Personification once again as dancing and merriness are the qualities of humans.
Write at least two lines showing similes.Ans. In a simile, we compare two, unlike things by using words like, 'as, 'like' etc.
Two lines showing similes:
1. - "I wandered lonely as a cloud" Here the poet makes a comparison between him and the cloud.
2. "Continuous as the stars that shine"
Here the daffodils are compared to the stars.
What does the word "crowd" exactly mean?Ans. The meaning of the word "crowd":
"Crowd" means a large number of people collected together. But here in the poem, it means the large number of daffodils that the poet had seen there beside the lake beneath the trees. Why does the poet compare himself to a cloud?Ans. The poet compares himself to a cloud at the beginning of the poem because he was wandering about in a state of loneliness and with no specific direction. He was totally free and detached just like clouds that are unattached and move freely in all directions. The poet was actually just wandering with no specific direction like clouds.Write the main idea of the poem.Ans. The main idea of the poem:
The main idea of the poem is that nature has charming beauty. The poet wants to say that nature has healing power. It can be a great source of pleasure for us. According to William Wordsworth, nature is worth more than wealth because it is more pleasurable and enjoyable.Do you like this poem? Why?Ans. Yes, I like this poem very much because, in this poem, the poet portrays a very beautiful picture of a simple natural scene. The selection of words is simple and very beautiful and the poet uses similes and personifications in such a way that this makes pictures and images in my mind. The words appeal to my imagination and I can't help imagining that beautiful scene of the daffodils.
